The African Galápagos – A Hidden Haven of Biodiversity

Udzungwa Mountains National Park

Udzungwa Mountains National Park
Udzungwa Mountains National Park is one of Tanzania’s most enchanting and biologically diverse parks, often referred to as the “African Galápagos” for its incredible number of endemic species. Unlike typical savannah parks, Udzungwa is a lush rainforest paradise, home to rare primates such as the Iringa red colobus and the Sanje crested mangabey, found nowhere else on Earth. Towering trees, exotic birds, and vibrant butterflies add to the park’s magical atmosphere, making it a must-visit for eco-tourists and nature lovers.

Hiking is the main activity here, with trails ranging from gentle walks to challenging treks through dense forest and up steep mountain slopes. The most popular hike leads to the breathtaking Sanje Waterfalls, which plunge 170 meters into the forest below and offer spectacular views over the Kilombero Valley. With no roads penetrating the heart of the park, Udzungwa remains a true wilderness, offering visitors a rare chance to explore an untouched corner of Tanzania far removed from the typical safari crowds.
